Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin”, is one of the more common deficiencies. The most natural way to get Vitamin D is from exposure to the sunshine. Our skin takes in UVB rays and synthesizes into D3. This can be harder during the colder months of the year and for this reason it is important we are making sure we are getting enough vitamin D in our systems. Salmon, mackerel, and herring contain vitamin D3 and are good food sources when you aren’t able to soak up sunshine. Vitamin supplementation may be necessary; however, some Vitamin D supplements can interact with medications so be sure to ask your physician if there are any contraindications before use.
Just as there are many health benefits associated with Vitamin D there are also many health issues associated with a deficiency. Be sure you are getting your required Vitamin D this winter!
